Kinston team wins in Key West

The Unreel Fishing Team was fishing 82 miles west of Key West, Fla., in about 80 feet of water when the winning kingfish ate a three-pound runner around 10:30 a.m., on the second of two fishing days. As it turned out, the 56.44-pound King Mackerel became the winning catch, bringing first place honors to Captain Steve Squires and Lynwood Riggs, both of Kinston.

The two-day 2013 Key West Harbour King Mackerel Tournament, a sanctioned event of the Southern Kingfish Association, attracted 60 boats from Mississippi to North Carolina.

Squires also won first place for Senior Angler. Other Unreel fishing team members unable to attend the tournament are John Moore of Kinston and Mel Hoard of Atlantic Beach.

Shoes give hope

Soles4Souls facilitates the donations of shoes used to aid the hurting worldwide. The organization has distributed products to people in need in more than 120 countries on five continents and helped protect feet against disease.

More than 1.5 billion pairs of shoes lay idle in American closets. More than 300 million children around the world are without shoes. Soles4Souls gives away a pair of shoes every 19 seconds.

It is easy to help give hope — simply donate a pair of new or gently used shoes. All types of footwear are being collected, from sleek running shoes to stylish pumps, rugged work boots to cool sandals.

Drop-off containers will accept donations through Sunday in the office wing entrance at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 800 Rountree St. Kinston.

For more information, call the church office at 252-523-6146.
