Matthew Burwell didn’t break a sweat, and the chilly weather had nothing to do with it. He simply didn’t have time to.

That’s how easy Kinston’s boys tennis team made it look against Farmville Central.

Burwell’s match lasted less than half an hour, and his teammates followed suit as Kinston shutout the Jaguars in an Eastern Plains 2A Conference match at Bill Fay Park on Thursday.

Playing pro sets due to the cold Burwell won his No. 5 singles match, 10-0, and was the first one finished to start a quick sweep of the visitors.

“Did I expect to win 9-0? No, and I never do. But we have some solid kids this year, from 1 to 6, who can all play tennis,” Kinston coach Michael Moon said.

The closest match all day was the top-seeded singles pairing between Dan Hoang of Kinston and Kelvin Reid.

The match went 17 games, with Hoang winning 10 to stake the Vikings to a 6-for-6 sweep in singles to clinch the match.

The rout continued in doubles, and kept the Vikings (3-2, 2-2) on pace with league leader Tarboro and second place Greene Central.

“We’ve got a lot of talent this year,” said Hoang, a senior. “We’re going to have to continue practicing and working hard if we want to catch Greene Central and Tarboro.”

Hoang defeated Kelvin Reid, 10-7, in his singles match, then paired with Koty Wojeski to defeat Reid and Skylar Coburn, 8-4, in doubles.

Wojeski handled Christian Garcia, 10-3, in the No. 2 singles match, followed by Julian Quintero’s 10-2 win over Peyton Drake at No. 3 singles.

Stan Vanclooster, a senior foreign exchange student from Belgium, defeated Caleb Leggett, 10-2, at No. 4 singles. Nicolas Romero then handled Edgar Barrera, 10-3, in the sixth and final singles match.

Quintero and Vanclooster earned an 8-2 win in doubles and Burwell and Romero completed the sweep by beating Garcia and Barrera, 8-5.

“We’re young but we’ve got a lot of experience this year,” Hoang said. “We’re a real talented group that loves to play tennis.”
