Friends in Ministry supports Gate
Friends in Ministry is a group that endeavors to improve the well-being and quality of life for residents of Kinston and Lenoir County through spiritual empowerment, social awareness and community service.
The group recently presented a check for $1,000 to the Rev. Wanda Hall, director of The Gate, a faith-based community center for youth in Kinston. The contribution was made possible by public support of the Friends’ recently held African American Heritage Sunday celebration.
All proceeds from programs and projects presented by Friends go toward supporting other helping organizations in the community. Friends members, all local pastors, will present the Seven Last Sayings of Jesus on the Cross at 7 p.m. Friday at St. James AME Church, 402 E. Shine St.
Proceeds from this service will be donated to Inter Church OutReach. ICOR provides emergency assistance to individuals in crisis situations who need help with utility bills, medical expenses, fuel costs, housing, transportation, etc.

Kinston starts Civil War Round Table
The Kinston-Lenoir County Civil War Round Table has been started under the auspices of the Historical Preservation Group. The Civil War Round Table is a group of people with an interest in the American Civil War.
The mission of the local group is to study the history of the American Civil War; to stimulate interest and promote education in a broad range of topics related to that war; and to aid in the preservation and enhancement of its battlefields, cemeteries, relics and other historic sites and landmarks. A number of programs will be offered this year.
The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Queen Street Deli, 115 S. Queen St. The meal will be Dutch treat. Sarah Risky-Davis, new site manager of the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center, will speak on the new attraction and what it has to offer.

North Lenoir fundraiser today
The North Lenoir High School Drama Booster Club will have a fundraiser today at the Piggly Wiggly on U.S. 258 North.
Hamburger or hot dog meals — including chips and beverage — will be available for $5 all day in the parking lot.
Proceeds will benefit the school’s upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz,” to be presented at the high school April 18-21.
