Roundup: SL softball squeezes by Swansboro

South Lenoir scored all of its runs in the sixth and seventh innings to rally from behind at beat Swansboro, 6-5, in an East Central 2A Conference contest at Swansboro on Friday.

The Blue Devils, who were held to four hits, scored three runs in each of the last two innings to erase a 3-0 hole. The Pirates left the winning run on base in the seventh.

Morgan Mentz had a double in the first inning, then Taylor Sandlin, Madison Herring and Madison Beyer each singled for South Lenoir. Beyer earned the win in relief, entering in the third. She gave up three hits and struck out three, including the final Swansboro batter, in five innings of work.

South Lenoir (6-2, 3-1) hosts Croatan on Tuesday.

 

PARROTT ACADEMY 19, RALEIGH ST. DAVID’S 2 5 INN.: At Raleigh, the Patriots remained undefeated with the EPIC win on Thursday.

Michelle Ballard went 2-for-2 with a double, triple and drove in four runs and Darci Basden had a home run and drove in six runs. Brianna Casey earned the win for Parrott (5-0, 2-0).

 

BASEBALL

 

SWANSBORO 4, SOUTH LENOIR 3: At Swansboro, a base-running mistake in the sixth cost the Blue Devils the tying run.

Courtesy runner Austin Deaver rounded third for home on a single by Brett Davis, and was tagged out trying to get back to the bag when he saw he couldn’t make it home.

Garrett Holland went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Justin Howard and Davis singled as South Lenoir had three runs on four hits.

The Blue Devils led 2-0 early in the game.

Wyatt Janning gave up four runs, one earned, on three hits, walked four and struck out five in 4 1/3 innings in the loss. Holland threw 1 2/3 perfect innings in relief.

South Lenoir (3-4, 1-3) hosts Croatan on Tuesday.

 

BOYS GOLF

 

SL’S WHITE MEDALIST AGAIN: South Lenoir’s David White shot an 80 at Coharie Country Club on Thursday to earn medalist honors for the second straight East Central 2A Conference match.

White’s score came in “difficult conditions,” coach Jimmy Smith said.

He leads the conference at the mid-point of the season, Smith said.

As a team the Blue Devils finished fourth with a 360. Topsail won the match.

Tyler Sanderson shot an 88, Jonathan Howard a 93 and Hunter Kennedy a 99 for South Lenoir.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

 

PARROTT ACADEMY 2, RALEIGH ST. DAVID’S 1 OT: At Raleigh, the Patriots earned an EPIC win.

Sydney Thomas scored on an assist from Holden Arthur to tie it, then Jana Warren scored on a free kick on OT for the win. Keeper Anna Sale had eight saves in goal.

The Patriots are now 4-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 in conference.
