Trenton Girl Scout earns Silver Award
Cora Allen of Trenton has been awarded the Girl Scout Silver Award by Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines, which is the second highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The award symbolizes a Girl Scout Cadette’s accomplishments in Girl Scouting and her community as she discovers her strengths and takes action to make the world a better place.
For her Silver Award project, Allen educated Craven County riders about horse abuse, neglect and abandonment — developing an educational booth about the U.S. Equine Rescue League to share information with riders at Cottonwood Farm’s first Hunter Pace Event.
She also organized a concession stand at the Cottonwood Farm event that raised enough money to allow the USERL to purchase items on their wish list to help 20 horses in their care.
Allen is the daughter of David and Janice Allen, and attends Arendell Parrott Academy. She has been a Girl Scout since 2009, and is a member of Girl Scout Troop 509, led by Mary Silver and Dottie Corning. In addition to Girl Scouting, Allen enjoys horseback riding and volleyball.
The Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout in the sixth through eighth grades can earn. It recognizes the work of Girl Scout Cadettes who demonstrate leadership skills culminating in 50 hours or more dedicated toward a service project that makes a difference in their community.
Focusing on reducing child abuse
