An early morning outage occurred Thursday, knocking out power in areas of Lenoir, Greene and Wayne counties.

For approximately two hours in the early morning hours of Thursday, about 11,400 customers were affected, including about 7,500 Progress Energy Carolinas and 3,900 Pitt and Greene EMC customers.

“That’s roughly about 45 percent of our system,” Tony Barrow, Pitt and Greene’s director of engineering, said.

Ryan Mosier, a Duke Energy spokesman, said Snow Hill, Grifton and Kinston addresses were the primary areas affected.

“A transmission line went out of service as a result of equipment failure,” he said, adding a piece of equipment that monitors flow caught fire.

Barrow said the equipment was in the switching station and caused an outage on the transmission line. Four of Pitt and Greene’s substations are powered by that transmission line, he said.

All power was restored by 6 a.m. in affected areas.
