Lenoir Community College, in conjunction with Spirit AeroSystems, will host its first Advanced Manufacturing Career Day Tuesday.
The event will give people interested in working with Spirit or taking industrial courses at LCC a taste of what the field has to offer at the company’s conference facility at the N.C. Global TransPark.
From 6 to 8 p.m., various booths will be manned by Spirit employees of several areas, including aerospace manufacturing and repair, engineering and welding technology.
Along with a hands-on preview, LCC is hoping the Career Day will attract more people to enroll in both the college’s Curriculum Education and Continuing Education programs.
“(The benefit is) understanding what you’re going to get yourself into,” said Carlos Cotto, LCC’s coordinator for Continuing Education. “If you want to get employed with Spirit, this is the only venue locally that you would have in order to get into the company.”
He said other ways to apply to Spirit include navigating though online applications and questionnaires, whereas attending Tuesday’s event and possibly enrolling in a course or degree program will make you workforce ready for the company.
Most aerospace-related courses, especially those involving actually aircraft construction, are hosted on site at Spirit.
Spirit communicated with LCC that it will hire students who complete aerospace programs at the college, bringing on 66 last year — 52 out of Curriculum and 14 out of Continuing Education. The latter program takes 120 hours to complete and is focused on sole preparation for the working at Spirit or any composite manufacturer, Cotto said.
“Those 120 hours are going to get you information and skills to get employed at Spirit,” he said. “You take those three classes, you are exactly what Spirit wants.”
