It’s all about the dogs, really.
When Judy Ellis of Raising Awareness for the Developmentally Disabled contacted Teena Williams about organizing a dog day to benefit RADD, she went to the right person. After all, as Williams will tell you, she’s been around dogs her whole life.
All of them have been boxers, until American bulldog Lilly became her companion.
“They’re all bulldog variety,” Williams said. “They all come from the mastiff. I say, when I talk about Lilly being different from what I had, I say she’s my first white dog, she’s my first dog with a long tail, and she’s the first dog I’ve ever had that doesn’t have an underbite. So, those are basically the differences. But, all of the bulldoggy types have similarities.”
Williams said what makes Lilly stand out is her personality.
“Because she’s a clown — she’s funny,” Williams said. “She’s very good-natured. She’s very friendly with most people. If she doesn’t like somebody, I don’t think I like them either.”
Lilly’s a fit and active pooch, and it’s because she’s well-cared after, Williams said. Her previous two dogs developed cancer — one had lymphoma, and the next developed rectal cancer. As a result, Williams became even more focused on keeping her dogs healthy.
She doesn’t personally cook all of Lilly’s food, but does make sure Lilly gets plenty of exercise.
“I walk her at least twice a day, and then she runs in the yard some, too,” Williams said. “I have a fenced-in yard, and she has play-dates that come over and they run and play.”
