Rotarians get Water Park update
May 23 is the scheduled grand opening of the Water Park at the Woodmen Community Center on Vernon Avenue.
Bill Ellis, Kinston-Lenoir County Parks and Recreation director, recently addressed the Kinston Evening Rotary Club about all the Water Park will have to offer. He also described the other parts of the Recreation Center at the site, including having one of only four certified swimming pools for competitive events in North Carolina. Plans also were discussed for using the property that formerly housed the CSS Ram Neuse.
Evening Rotary meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the House of Wang.
Clean Up volunteers get free lunch
An expanded Clean Up Day Saturday will prepare downtown Kinston and East Kinston neighborhoods for the annual Festival on the Neuse scheduled for May 1-4.
Volunteers who help pick up trash in the designated areas will be treated to an old fashioned Pig Pickin’ to be hosted by Kinston Promise Neighborhood, Inc. and Pride of Kinston.
Pride, Kinston Promise and City Councilman Sammy Aiken have joined forces to organize the clean up day which begins at 9 a.m. in Pearson Park. Volunteers will register, be briefed and assigned to specific areas for removing debris and trash.
The project’s objective is to make the point that a clean city is aesthetically pleasing as well as good for economic development, according to the sponsors.
The Pig Pickin’ supplied by King’s Restaurant will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Pearson Park. Around 1:30 p.m., the group will plant a tree in the park in observance of Arbor Day and Earth Day. The tree is being supplied by Charles Hughes Construction.
Kinston’s Appearance Commission, headed by Barbara Rose, also has signed on as an event sponsor.
This will be the 10th Downtown Clean Up project sponsored by Pride of Kinston in cooperation with others, including the City of Kinston, the Appearance Commission and various youth organizations.
Farm to Table event planned
“From Our Farm to Your Table” will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 6 at the Woodmen Community Center. The event will be hosted by Chelsea and Daniel Sutton from Nature’s Touch Farm to educate the public about grass farming and connect them with food sources in Lenoir County.
