Moseley-Bright DAR welcomes Boy Scouts

Members of Boy Scout Troop 41 presented the program for the February DAR Moseley-Bright Chapter meeting.

They conducted a flag retirement ceremony, officially retiring 17 American flags. In addition to learning the proper way to retire a flag, each audience member received a copy of the United States Flag Code that instructs how to display, care for, honor and dispose of the flag.

The Kingston Society, Children of the American Revolution, attended the program. As is customary at the February meeting, the Society gave its annual report of CAR activities and accomplishments. The Moseley-Bright Chapter, DAR sponsors the Kingston Society.

Lots to offer today at Farmer’s Market

The Lenoir County Farmer’s Market is now open for its regular seasonal hours, 8 a.m. to 2 or 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays (including today). Some produce vendors might stay later.

Strawberries are in season and ready for shortcake and whipped cream, or just as they are. Lenoir County farmers have been lucky this season. Mark Keene, agricultural extension agent, reports no cases of Strawberry Mild Yellow Edge virus or the Strawberry Mottle virus.

Vendors today include Putnam’s, Porter’s, TC Smith, Ronnie Hanchey and Bill Tilghman providing a variety of asparagus, strawberries, kale, mustard, turnips, bok choy, spinach and other leafy greens, green and maybe some red tomatoes and whatever else has ripened enough to bring to market.

Farmhouse Kitchen & Bakery will have butter pecan sweet rolls; chocolate, lemon, sweet potato, praline apple and strawberry bread; yeast bread and rolls; whole wheat yeast bread and rolls; and samples for tasting.

Rodney Jarman will have kettle cooked pork skins, and boiled and fried peanuts. Barbara Sebald will bring heirloom tomato plants — Roma, Delicious, Rutgers, Cherokee Purple, Black Crim, Beefsteak, Brandywine, Mortgage Lifter — and hybrid tomato plants — Sweety, SuperSweet 100, Big Boy, Garden Monster. She also will have Swedish ivy, spider plant and Vermillion house plants.

Almost Heaven Nursery & Farm will have landscaping plants, vegetable and herb plants, palm and banana trees, several varieties of Japanese maple and indoor/outdoor plans.

Nature’s Touch farm will have farm fresh, pasture raised eggs. Their fresh chickens will be available May 4 and 18, June 1 and 15, and July 6 and July 20.

Extension offers jewelry making class

The Neuse Extension & Community Association will host a silver jewelry-making workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Lenoir County Cooperative Extension, 1791 Hwy. 11/55.

The two-hour workshop will teach the basics of making a bracelet using silver wire, fasteners and glass beads. All supplies will be available at the workshop. Pre-registration is required due to limited space.

To register, or for more information, call Trudy Pickett at 252-527-2191.
