Council on Aging highlights artist
The Lenoir County Council on Aging has named Kinston artist Frazier Bruton as the Artist of the Month for December. Bruton is a member of the seniors art class at the Skinner Senior Center.
“I saw this white rose in a friend’s back yard and was stunned by its beauty,” Bruton said. “I wondered if I could actually paint this, and … found it difficult to paint its twists and turns.”
Bruton was a student under Eddie Cox, a close friend who taught the classes until his deathin November 2011. The classes are now taught by Bettie Saville.
Bruton describes Cox as a graphic artist and Saville as a true artist, with completely different styles. “Bettie focuses on values of colors while Eddie let us go by the ‘seat of our paints’,” he said.
Bruton noted how fortunate the Council on Aging is to have Saville teaching the class now. It meets from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays at the Skinner Center, 112 E. Blount St. The classes are free, except for cost of art supplies. Visitors are welcome to drop by and observe, or call 252-527-1545 for information.
LMH Foundation presents scholarship
Ashley Boothe of Seven Springs is the 2012 recipient of the Nancy Peele Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the Lenoir Memorial Foundation. She accepted a check from Foundation Director Dirk Griffith.
Boothe is completing her studies at Lenoir Community College to become a radiologist. She also recently was inducted into the Omicron Rho chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society for outstanding students in two-year college programs.
Upon her May graduation, Boothe plans to work as a radiology technician, operating a variety of specialized imaging equipment, including X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, sonograms and mammograms.
The Nancy Peele Scholarship was named for a longtime hospital employee. Peele was a beloved member of the staff for 47 years, working first in the Radiology Department and then in the laboratory. When she died in 2009, her colleagues and family created a scholarship as a living memorial to her that offers financial assistance for students endeavoring to enter one of the two fields for which she devoted most of her life.
