Walk to improve fitness
During the annual internationally recognized Medical Fitness Week, sponsored by the Medical Fitness Association, medical fitness centers and communities offer programming that focuses on supporting skills needed to develop healthy lifestyle habits.
An MFA member since 1997, the Minges Wellness Center of Lenoir Memorial Hospital participated in this event the last week in April. The center practices the medical fitness difference with staff who are exercise specialists, dietitians and nurses. Lifestyle programming opportunities focus on holistic approaches to exercise, nutrition and other health improvements.
During 2012 and 2013, Lighten Up Lenoir has provided a web based support tool for persons ready to make changes in weight management. A new walk program named the Minges Mile Walk Club kicked off Wednesday and serves as a new incentive to increase the focus on walking as an excellent chronic exercise habit.
For information about the walking club, call the Wellness Center at 252-522-7014 or 252-522-7207.
Power Squadron offers boating course
Members of the Kinston Sail and Power Squadron — a division of the United States Power Squadron — will teach “America’s Boating Course” to the general public during May. This course, which covers the fundamentals of safe boating and basic piloting, is presented in six evening sessions.
The course meets specific and National Association of State Boating Law Administrators requirements for certification, and successful completion of the course could qualify owners for a reduction in boat insurance premiums.
Participants will learn the basics for safe and comfortable boating. This revised, comprehensive course includes lessons on seamanship, boat handling, boat types, rules of the road, navigation aids, regulations, adverse conditions, marine VHF radio, knots, trailering and an introduction to piloting. A course manual, with training charts and basic navigation tools, is included.
As part of the Power Squadron’s tradition of public service, certified instructors have taught this course to more than 3 million boaters since 1914.
The course costs $35 (to cover materials) if pre-registered, or $40 at the door. Classes are held from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays — starting Monday and concluding May 22 — at the Neuseway Nature Center in the Exchange Education Building.
The Kinston squadron tries to reach as many citizens as possible via safe boating courses and the courtesy Vessel Inspection program.
