Someone felt the need for portable power and took two generators from Swinson Funeral Home.
Robert Swinson III said he believed the theft occurred around 2-4 a.m. April 27. The police report notes the generators were last known to be secure at 5 p.m. April 26. Funeral home employees discovered the theft the following Monday, April 29.
“When we went into our garage, we found it had been broken into,” Swinson said.
Police were alerted Monday. The generators, which are valued on the report as $1,999 a piece, are being replaced.
“It’s something we use all the time,” Swinson said. “When the lights go out around here, we use a generator for back-up.”
There’s no announced suspect and Kinston police are investigating the crime as a larceny.
“That’s pretty much all we know, now,” said Woody Spencer, spokesman for the Kinston Department of Public Safety.
Spencer said the thief or thieves will likely attempt to sell the units.
