Jazz Ensemble to perform Tuesday

Bob Jeffcott, a widely known trumpeter from Kinston, is a regular performer at the North Carolina Jazz Festival, including this year’s 33rd annual event held in February in Wilmington.

The Bob Jeffcott Jazz Ensemble — with Steve Creech, Mort Stine, Bob Tyson, Earle Abernethy and Tommy Smith — will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library’s Schechter Auditorium, 510 N. Queen St. The free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library as part of its cultural, educational and entertaining mission for the community.

Bridge club names winners

The Fairfield Duplicate Bridge Club played a regular game May 7.

The winners were: Roz Ahrens and Jack Weeden, first; Pinkey Harper and Geneva Hood, second; Jane Hood and Barbara Sebald, third; and Dayle Pond and Edith Cahn, fourth.

A regular game will be played at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday at Fairfield Center. The club welcomes and encourages all bridge players.

Kinston woman earns master’s degree

Kelly L. Bradshaw of Kinston has graduated magna cum laude from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., with a Master’s in Social Work.

The 11 a.m. ceremony was held Friday in the Siegel Center on the VCU campus. Her concentration was in administration, policy and planning, and she aspires to work with the homeless.

Bradshaw is a Kinston High School graduate of the Class of 2005. She earned a Bachelor of Science in social work from N.C. Central University in Durham. She is the daughter of Margie D. Jones of Kinston and the late Linwood H. Bradshaw, who lived in Kinston.

 

National organization honors student

Olivia Wilneisah Holloway of Kinston recently was recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization, at UNC Greensboro.

Nationwide, Sigma Alpha Lambda is dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.

Holloway is a member of the Kinston High School Class of 2011, graduating from the International Baccalaureate Program. She is the daughter of Willie and Rozetta Holloway of Kinston.

 

Woodmen inaugurate golf tournament

Woodmen of the World is hosting its inaugural golf tournament at 8 a.m. May 17 at Cutter Creek Golf Course.

A pig-picking lunch will follow the 18-hole event. Teams/players are needed at $65 per player and sponsorships are being solicited at $100 and $250 levels. Proceeds will support the Woodmen Youth Camp in Fort Barnwell.
