An all-female flat track roller derby league has settled into the Wreck Room in downtown Kinston. The Ring City Roller Girls, made up of 15 women throughout Eastern North Carolina, held their first co-ed scrimmage Monday in their new home, a former furniture building donated by Mother Earth Brewing Co. on Queen Street. The team practices every Monday, Wednesday and Sunday at their new home.
According their website, the Ring City Rollers were founded in Greenvilleby Sara Yoder — also known as Shorty Fuse — in 2006. At that time, the team had a rule that stated skaters must live within 50 miles of Greenville. The leaders took a map and drew a 50 mile “ring” around the city, thus the name “RingCity.” Since then it has changed to “Roller Girls” and the “Ring” has come to represent the home cities of the skaters, including Greenville, New Bern, Kinston, Jacksonvilleand Goldsboro.
