Students help Ronald McDonald

South Lenoir High School has been collecting drink tabs for Greenville’s Ronald McDonald House for more than two years. Wanting to do more, Dusk Stroud, Zander Beamon, Samantha Stroud and Sarah Smith initiated a more focused campaign and got clearance from the school’s administration to start collecting.

Daphne Pollock, South Lenoir’s vice principal and an avid Ronald McDonald volunteer, helped the team gather items and gave them positive guidance. They asked churches, clubs and families in the area to donate money and items for the house.

The money supports families inside the house who may not be able to afford the amount asked for a night’s stay; however, no one is ever turned away. Over a three-month period, more than $1,150 was collected, and more than 300 items — including cleaning supplies, school supplies and food — and two years worth of drink tabs filling trash bags and boxes were delivered to the house. The students said it was a worthwhile effort that brought a whole community together.

Boat inspections free on Saturday

In recognition of National Safe Boating Week Saturday through May 24, Kinston Sail & Power Squadron will offer free boat inspections or vessel safety checks beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday at the Neuse Sport Shop on Highway 70 East.

Certified vessel examiners will check boats for safety items such as flares, lighting and life jackets. Upon passing voluntary and free inspection, the boat will receive a decal verifying that it meets federal safety requirements.

The Kinston Sail & Power Squadron meets the third Thursday of each month with a variety of program speakers. For more information about inspections, call Robert Pittman at 252-361-4304; for course information, call Chip Athey at 252-522-3287; for squadron membership information, call Hyman Stadiem at 252-522-4591.
