The Community Council for the Arts is offering a broad range of activities under its “big top” of summer art camp sessions, beginning today. Children can hone their scientific investigative skills, create crafts and stretch their improvisational performance talents.

Here’s a look at what’s being offered “Under the Big Top.”

Be a Scientist: Clue Crew Investigator Camp

Ages 5-8 (rising kindergarten-third graders)

9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 24-27

$75 for members/$85 for non-members

Grab a magnifying glass, Sherlock Holmes hat and learn to solve a few mysteries this summer. The Clue Crew Camp will teach students to look for clues to learn about science and the world around. Students will prepare for cases by learning some CSI skills and following the clues to solve mysteries. Campers will learn about earth, life and chemical science while solving puzzles and investigating the world.

Campers will be engaged with hands on learning, labs and projects. This camp has a maximum number of 16 participants.

Girls Only: Spa-tacular Science

Ages 7-12

1 to 4 p.m. June 24-27

$75 for members/$85 for non-members

Catherine Norris from Science Made Simple will teach science concepts with camp, geared toward the girl who wants to combine science, crafts and beauty all in one. Included will be making take-home spa treatments, whipping up yummy treats, making fun crafts to wear, learning some science and having fun. Campers should note any food allergies on the application. This class has a maximum of 16 participants.

Pottery Camp

Ages 7 and older

$80 for members/$90 for non-members

For those who love pottery classes or have never experienced putting their hands into clay, an experience awaits. Pottery camp will give the chance to use the pottery wheel and to hand build. The maximum number of participants is 16 per session. Session 1: 2 to 5 p.m. June 24-28; Session 2: 2 to 5 p.m. July 8-12.

Mommy & Me

Ages 4 and younger (with an adult)

9 to 11 a.m. July 30-Aug. 1

$30 for members/$40 for non-members

This class is a continuation of the monthly Mommy & Me activities. Small children and their parents can enjoy each other in this fun, no-pressure craft camp. Techniques will include cut and paste plus markers, stickers and paint to help guide little ones in developing creative skills.

Performing Arts Camp

Ages: rising first- through 12th-graders

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 5-10

$100 for members/$115 for non-members

A new twist to the Moppets program will be presented by the Missoula Children’s Touring Theatre group from Missoula, Mont. The camp will be for one week, culminating in the performance of “Beauty Lou and the Country Beast.” All campers will be participants in the performances and involved in non-threatening auditions.

Campers must be available for all rehearsals and dress rehearsals — scheduled within the advertised camp schedule — and performances. Costumes will be provided. Performances will be at the arts center. The camper will need to bring lunch each day and the arts center will provide a selection of non-carbonated beverages. The maximum number of campers is 60.

Performances will be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and 2:30 p.m. Aug. 10.

Art Camps

Summer Art Camps will feature traditional arts including painting, pottery and multimedia. Classes will be offered concurrently with students rotating classes each day. There’s a lot of fun and excitement around this year’s theme “Under the Big Top.” Some artwork produced during the camp will be sent home with the campers throughout their camp week; however, much of their work will be kept at the arts center and displayed for the Art & Craft Camp reception planned for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21.

Ages 3-4 (must be potty trained)

9 to 11 a.m. today and Thursday (May 28 and 30)

$35 for members/$45 for non-members

All other sessions run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and cost $80 for members/$90 for non-members. Ages 5-6: July 29-Aug. 2; Ages 7-8: July 22-26; Ages 9-12: July 15-19.

Craft Camp

Ages 5-12

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 13-16

$65 for members/$70 for non-members

This camp differs from art camp in that children focus on activities involving materials for basketry, textiles, traditional pottery and more. Craft Camp participants will not have repeat projects from Summer Art Camp and will have their work exhibited in the Camp reception on Aug. 21.

Instructors of all camps are professional artists or arts educators. Supplies and snacks are included in camp fees. T-shirts are available at $12 each. All camps have a limited registration in order to provide children with the best camp.
