HVAC/R students earn scholarships

The N.C. State Board of Refrigeration Examiners has awarded scholarships to Pitt Community College students Christopher Cobb and Cody Tyndall. Both are finishing the first year of the college’s Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology program this summer.

Cobb, who lives in Greenville, has a 3.46 grade-point average and will receive $1,500 to offset the cost of his educational expenses. Tyndall, a Deep Run resident, has a 3.62 GPA and will receive $1,000.

“Christopher and Cody are consistently at the top of the class academically,” said Billy Mozingo, department chairman. “Both of them exhibit a strong desire to learn and show excellent leadership potential.”

NCSBRE, which licenses the state’s commercial refrigeration contractors, typically offers two scholarships each year through a competitive statewide program. Students who apply must be North Carolina residents and be enrolled or planning to enroll in a two-year HVAC/R or commercial refrigeration program.

Neuseway to offer free fishing event

NeusewayNature Park, 401 W. Caswell St.,and Neuse Sport Shop will co-host a free fishing event from 9 a.m. to noon June 8 for children ages 15 and younger at the park’s pond, which has a pier, a fish feeder and stocked catfish.

To improve children’s chances of catching fish, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will stock fish before the event. Commission fisheries biologists will provide free loaner rods and reels and basic tackle, such as hooks, sinkers and bobbers, to those who don’t bring their own. The public is encouraged to bring its own fishing bait.

The event is one of more than 35 children’s fishing events supported by the Commission, in partnership with Neuse Sport Shop, Trout Unlimited and the U.S. Forest Service, to celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week 2013.

The events, held throughout the state each year from late-May through early June, are listed on the Commission’s website alphabetically by county.

Young anglers registered at any of these fishing events can enter a statewide drawing to win one of more than 150 fishing-related prizes. The grand prize is a lifetime sportsman license, with fresh and saltwater fishing privileges, and hunting privileges, donated by Neuse Sport Shop. The first prize is a lifetime freshwater fishing license, donated by the Trout Council. They are donating other prizes as well.

The Commission will conduct the drawing the end of June and publish winners in early July at ncwildlife.org. For more information, go to takemefishing.org or ncwildlife.org/fishing.
