Pink Hill Elementary walks for cancer

Folks riding by Pink Hill Elementary School Wednesday afternoon probably took a second look at the gathered crowd.

Staff and students hosted their first Relay for Life school-wide walk and celebration with a balloon arch, star studded walkway and an array of purple shirts. Survivors, victims and their families were honored and recognized in their fights against cancer and led the crowd in several laps around the school. The celebration ended with an Icee Pop party for everyone involved.

With the generosity and support of the community, the school has more than doubled its Relay for Life goal this year.

Brush up on preserving food

A Home Food Preservation Workshop will be from 2 to 4 p.m. June 28 at the Lenoir County Cooperative Extension Office, 1791 Hwy. 11/55.

Participants can learn the guidelines for canning and freezing foods safely at home. Dehydration and specialty canning also will be covered. There is no cost, but seating is limited.

Pre-registration is required by calling 252-527-2191.

Stand up for elder justice

A walk is being held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the North Carolina Veteran’s Home, 2150 Hull Road, to recognize and defend elderly victims of abuse and exploitation.

The event is part of a county effort to raise awareness of elder abuse and educate the community on prevention and interception of these acts. Older adult advocates are encouraged to participate to show their value of justice for elderly residents of Lenoir County.

The Administration on Aging 2013 reports that in 2012, more than 21,000 cases were reported to N.C. Adult Protective Services. Estimates of actual occurrence translate to 105,000 annual cases of elder abuse or exploitation in the state. With the baby boomer generation aging into retirement and other benefits, a larger than ever population is being targeted by scams. It is important for citizens to know what these potential risks are.

Sponsors are the Lenoir County Council on Aging, Lenoir County Department of Social Services, Lenoir Memorial Hospital, Lenoir County Senior Health Insurance Information Program, Eastern Carolina Council Area Agency on Aging, and the N.C. Veteran’s Home-Kinston.
