Kinston woman receives scholarship

Lucy Manning, a May graduate of Arendell Parrott Academy, has received the 2013-14 STAR Scholarship from P.E.O. Sisterhood, an international organization that provides scholarships, grants, awards and loans to support its mission of creating educational opportunities for women through its six philanthropies.

This monetary honor is given to a deserving high school senior woman who exhibits excellence in academics, leadership, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future success. Nominated by Chapter AI of Washington, Manning was presented the $2,500 award by Lisa Lewis and Jean King during Parrott’s senior awards ceremony May 30.

The daughter of Ned and Penny Manning of Kinston, Lucy will attend UNC this fall.

Library to host father-son event

The fourth annual Father & Son Breakfast will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library’s Schechter Auditorium. The breakfast is for fathers and sons — ages 5 to 12 — and for father-figures or mentors in a male child’s life. The event will include crafts, prize giveaways and bonding time.

Kinston native James “Jimbo” Perry will be the featured speaker. Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Perry felt called into private practice in Kinston in 1985. He is married to Joan T. Perry, MD, and has five sons and three grandchildren. The Perrys also have been “parents” to a number of other children over the years.

“Jimbo” Perry is active in his church and in the community, supporting many local organizations, including Little by Little, a mentor program for elementary students.

Seating is limited and only those registered will be admitted. Pre-register by contacting Antuan Hawkins at 252-527-7066, ext. 133, or neuselibrary.org.

Adopt a feline in June

June is officially Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, and the Lenoir County SPCA has lots of cats and kittens in need of good homes. To increase adoptions, a donor is sponsoring part of the adoption fee for any cat or kitten adopted during June.

Reduced fees will range between $25 and $60, including vaccinations and spay/neuter certificates.

Meet the adoptables in person at the Rouse Road shelter and at Kinston’s Petsense and Second Chances Thrift Store, or online on the SPCA’s facebook and Petfinder pages.
