Lenoir elders bring home the glory
The Senior Games, held each spring across the state, showcase the ability and talent of North Carolinians aged 55 years and older.
Competing in the Neuse River Games — along with Duplin, Craven, Pamlico, Jones and Greene counties — Lenoir County participants brought home many medals. Fran Allison earned gold in horseshoes, softball, 1-mile cycle, table tennis (singles and doubles), 100-, 200- and 400-meter run, badminton (singles and doubles), basketball, long jump and shot put. She won silver in broad jump and discus, and bronze in baseball.
Rufus Allison won gold in badminton (singles and doubles), shot put, discus, long jump and broad jump. He won silver in softball, bocce ball and corn hole. Annaliese Hunneke won gold in tennis singles, and Fred Hunneke received gold in tennis singles and doubles. Gene Rybolt won gold for corn hole, silver in shuffleboard and bronze in football throw, softball throw and bocce ball.
The billiards players earned seven medals, including the Rev. Joe Hill, Jerry Wiggins, Bill Lawson, Matt Croom, William Holloway, Ken Garris and Harrold Crawford.

Summer Food Program information
The Community Development Resource services are participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge. Acceptance and participation requirements are the same regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, with no discrimination in meal service.

Groups plan women’s empowerment event
Afros & Stilettos is partnering with Screaming with a Voice to bring forth Parallel Women 2013!
The Women’s Empowerment event will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 22 at United American FWB Denomination Headquarters, 1011 Dr. J.E. Reddick Circle. It will include workshops, 12 motivational speakers, food, fun and more. Registration is $25 at the door. The cost includes breakfast from 9 to 9:30 a.m., and lunch from noon to 1 p.m.
