2013 All-Free Press Baseball teams

 

 

First Team

 

BEN BRANN | Greene Central | Senior | Pitcher

Ben Brann dominated on the mound for the Rams this season. He went 8-1 with a 1.27 ERA in nine starts and 11 appearances. He threw seven complete games, five shutouts, and struck out 59 to only 28 walks in 55 1/3 innings. The left-hander, who has signed with Barton College, also hit .310 and had a pair of home runs as Greene Central rallied to finish tied for first in the Eastern Plains 2A Conference.

 

PIERCE BEAMAN | Parrott Academy | Sophomore | Pitcher

Only a sophomore, Pierce Beaman went 5-2 with a 2.86 ERA for the Eastern Plains Independent Conference champion Patriots. He struck out 30 in 48 innings of work.

 

MIKE STANCIL | Ayden-Grifton | Senior | Pitcher

The senior right-hander went 5-1 with a 2.42 ERA to help the Chargers to a second place finish in the Carolina 1A Conference. Stancil threw four complete games and struck out 66. He also hit .324 and drove in 12 runs as an all-conference selection.

 

HUNTER CANNON | Ayden-Grifton | Sophomore | Catcher

Hunter Cannon hit for average this season at .371 while catching every single inning for the Chargers. He also had five doubles and 17 RBIs and was an all-conference pick.

 

GARRETT HOLLAND | South Lenoir | Senior | Infield

The senior overcame shoulder issues this season to hit .361, drive in a team-best 16 runs and hit two home runs. Holland also went 2-1 with two saves and had a 4.20 ERA on the mound.

 

DYLAN PUCHALSKI | North Lenoir | Senior | Infield

Dylan Puchalski brought the big bat when North Lenoir needed him to. He hit .324 with 18 RBIs, had eight doubles and three home runs. Puchalski was signed to play baseball at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville.

 

ZACCHAEUS RASBERRY | Parrott Academy | Freshman | Infield

Zaccheaus Rasberry may have only been a freshman, but he didn’t play like it. The speedster hit .358, scored 28 runs, drove in 25 and had eight extra-base hits, including three triples and a home run. He also stole 26 bases in 20 games.

 

CHAD MURPHY | Greene Central | Senior | Infield

Chad Murphy was the Rams’ leading hitter. He hit .324, drove in a team-best 19 runs, hit a team-best four home runs and scored a team-high 16 runs. He has signed to play baseball at Mount Olive College.

 

GRANT TYNDALL | South Lenoir | Senior | Outfield

This year’s All-Free Press Player of the Year hit for average (.362), scored runs (18), had eight extra-base hits, and was 19-for-19 in stolen bases. As a lead-off batter he hit .588 with runners in scoring position. Oh, and not only has he signed to play at Mount Olive, he was also drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 26th round last weekend. 

 

WILL PRICE | Jones Senior | Senior | Outfield

Will Price blistered the baseball his final year in a Trojans uniform, hitting .393 with 24 RBIs. He also led the team with 9 extra-base hits, including two triples and two home runs, and scored 14 runs.

 

VeQUAIN JOYNER | Kinston | Senior | Outfield

VeQuain Joyner stepped right in after helping Kinston win a state title in basketball to help the Vikings both in the field and at the plate. He hit .349 and scored 15 runs and had an on-base percentage of .500.

 

TYLER ANTWINE | Bethel Christian | Senior | Hitter

Tyler Antwine couldn’t be stopped at the plate this season. Playing in all of the Trojans’ games, the shortstop/pitcher hit an area-best .491, had 28 total hits in 57 at-bats, scored 25 runs, drove in 16 and added five doubles. He also walked 23 times.

 

ALEX HARDISON | Bethel Christian | Senior | Utility

Alex Hardison did a little bit of everything for the Trojans this season. Some days he was behind the plate, some days he was at third base and others he played at just about every position on the field. Hardison hit .349, drove in nine runs and scored 24.
