Golfers swing for scholars

The Beulaville Area Chamber of Commerce recently held its Scholarship Golf Tournament at Key Vista Golf Course in Pink Hill.

The first-place winners were Chris Barber, Brian Brisson and Butch Budd. John Weston, president of the Beulaville Area Chamber of Commerce, presented the award.

The scholarship tournament helped fund three $1,000 scholarships.

 

ECU grad to give recital

Eric Loftin of Kinston, a 2011 graduate of ECU’s School of Music, will offer a voice recital of classical and musical theater pieces at 3 p.m. Sunday at Gordon Street Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.

Loftin most recently portrayed Professor Harold Hill in the local production of “The Music Man,” and he has served as bass soloist in Handel’s “Messiah”with Chowan University. Tim Price, organist of First Baptist Church, will serve as accompanist.

Gordon Street Christian Church is at 118 E. Gordon St. The public is invited.

 

Ford dealership plans Wounded Warrior event

LA GRANGE — Wynn Odom Ford will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from a prize raffle to assist service members who have been injured in the line of duty. All proceeds from the Military Appreciation Day scheduled for June 29 will be donated to the nonprofit Wounded Warrior Project, and will support a full range of programs and services for this generation of injured veterans and their families.

More than 47,000 servicemen and women have been injured in the recent military conflicts. In addition to the physical wounds, an estimated 400,000 live with the invisible wounds of war, including combat-related stress, major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Another 320,000 are believed to have experienced a traumatic brain injury while on deployment.

WWP’s 18 programs and services are uniquely structured to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment and engagement.

The June 29 event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will offer free drinks and hot dogs. Buy the tickets there and win prizes. Wynn Odom Ford is at 4743 E. Washington St., La Grange.

 

Managing the effects of cancer

I Can Cope, a support group for anyone whose life has been affected by cancer, will offer an informative presentation from 6 to 7 p.m. July 9 at the Lenoir Memorial Cancer Center, 703 Doctors Drive.

Ann Olack, registered dietician, will give a presentation about the basics for nutritious eating      during cancer treatment and recovery. She also will offer strategies for identifying and managing treatment-related problems that participants may experience. Suggestions for developing individualized, healthy eating habits will also be discussed. Nutritious eating is important during   treatment and recovery. I Can Cope provides an avenue for mutual support among those sharing a common experience. 

Sponsored by Lenoir Memorial Hospital and the American Cancer Society, the event is free to the public, but pre-registration is required by calling Janet Scism at 252-522-7600.
