Class expands artistic horizons
Painting with seniors at the Lenoir County Council on Aging art class has held a significantly important place in the life of Ruth Croom since the class began in 2000 under the teachings of the late Eddie Cox.
Now under Bettie Saville, Croom says new and exciting avenues of learning have opened, expanding her horizons even more into the fine arts.
“My love for nature holds my interest mainly in landscape art,” Croom said. “I am, however, very excited to be exposed to drawing, still life, flowers, portraits and experimenting with other mediums.”
The class for seniors 55 and older meets from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays at the Skinner Center, 112 E. Blount St. If interested, drop by or contact Mineko Holloway, executive director, at 252-527-1545 or mh.lccoa@suddenlinkmail.com.
Visit the Farmer’s Market
Stop by the Lenoir County Farmer’s Market today and welcome the newest vendor, John Upham from Upham Homestead, who brings organic produce, honey and eggs. His motto is “We grow green in Greene County.” He hopes to have honey this week, if the bees agree. He also sells 100 percent beeswax candles and homemade soaps — lye and regular — which his wife makes.
Fresh produce options will include okra, sweet corn, baby celery, string beans, blueberries, blackberries, pointed head and Napa cabbage, beets, lettuce, broccoli, squash varieties, bok choy, kale, mustard, spring onions, turnips, cucumbers, radishes and tomatoes.
The next cooking demo by Pat Walston, sous chef and lead instructor at Lenoir Community College’s Culinary Arts program, and her students will be July 2 featuring grillin’ and chillin’. There will be recipes for your July 4 cookout.
