Conservation winners recognized
The Lenoir Soil and Water Conservation District held its annual poster, essay, speech and computer designed slide show contest for the 2013 school year, and has announced the winners.
In the Lenoir County district competition in February, the first-place winners were Gracie Williams of Arendell Parrott Academy, sixth-grade computer designed slide show; Kaitlyn Johnson of Parrott, sixth-grade poster and essay contest; Alexi Casias of Pink Hill Elementary School, fifth-grade poster contest; David Potter of Bethel Christian Academy, third-grade poster contest; Abbey Holmes of Pink Hill Elementary, fourth-grade poster contest; Camille Edwards of Parrott, seventh-grade speech contest; and Andrew Draper of Parrott, eighth-grade speech contest.
Johnson’s poster also won in district area competition in March and claimed the state title in April, which awarded her a certificate and cash prize of $200.
Register for cheerleading camp
The Urban Spirits Cheerleading Camp will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon July 8-12 at the Woodmen Community Center, 2602 W. Vernon Ave.
The camp is for girls ages 5 to 17. The Woodmen Center’s girls programs aim to bring awareness to breast cancer and support research for a cure. The cost is $75 per child, which includes a camp T-shirt, shorts and lunch.

Bluegrass bands set for Saturday
The Eastern North Carolina Bluegrass Association will have its monthly concert Saturday in the Waller Building auditorium of Lenoir Community College.
Set to perform are Potter’s Clay, Still Water and The Harmony Boys. Mike Rose is in charge of sound. Admission is $7 at the door, with children 12 and younger admitted free. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.
