Short-term layoffs at North Carolina's military bases are close to taking hold because of the federal budget cuts that went into effect earlier this year.

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune said Tuesday that starting next week there will be cutbacks that includes a base pharmacy being closed Mondays, a vehicle registration office closed most of the summer, and other services closing.

Base schools will be closed for five days in September. Civilian employees will have to take one day of unpaid leave each week, for a total of 11 furlough days. Police, firefighters, and emergency medical workers are exempt from furloughs.

Fort Bragg's Womack Army Medical Center will close its main outpatient pharmacy on Sundays. Two other post pharmacies will be closed on other days.
