Continuing the 10th anniversary series of Sand in the Streets concerts, The Breakfast Club will perform at 6 p.m. today on the Pearson Park stage.

This Independence Day performance will be the band’s second appearance on a Sand in the Streets stage and promises to ignite the crowd in preparation of a July 4 fireworks extravaganza.

Rick Vernon, DownEast Today host, will emcee the evening, sponsored by Bojangles/Tands, Inc. The concert will honor Citizenship Night, according to Pride of Kinston Executive Director Adrian King.

“The show is to be styled ‘New Citizens Day’ to acknowledge individuals who are receiving their United States citizenship in a ceremony Thursday morning at Kinston’s historic Harmony Hall,” King said. “Some 26 candidates from 19 countries are listed by immigration services within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to be granted citizenship.”

Formed in 1993, the Breakfast Club is the longest running, most recognized 1980s tribute band in the United States, creating entertainment that embodies the enigmatic, creative and buoyant spirit of the MTV generation of the 1980s.

Unlike the other Sand in the Streets concerts which end at 8 p.m., this July 4 show will play from 6 to 9 p.m., followed by a night sky fireworks display over the Neuse River.

Every year since 2004, Kinston’s business leadership has stepped forward to help Pride produce the outdoor concerts, 51 in total through the 2012 season. From the first, they have provided the economic backbone making the concerts possible.

With four new ones added this year, the 2013 sponsor list in large measure mirrors the past, continuing the tradition of support from the business community.

Grab your lawn chairs and blankets, extend positive vibes for clear skies and start early for Pearson Park for an evening of music, excitement and celebration.
