Woman earns AARP ‘Volunteer of Year’
Fran Allison has been recognized as the Volunteer of the Year for 2013 for the AARP chapter 4109.
Allison has been active in the chapter for several years, is on the Board of Directors and has worked on many chapter projects. She has participated in the Senior Games for many years and has earned many medals — gold, silver and bronze. She also has participated in state and national games and has received medals in both of them.
Janice Sellers, chapter secretary, presented the award to Allison on behalf of the chapter.
The Gate offers camp
The Gate of Lenoir County will be sponsoring a free two-week fine arts summer camp from July 15 to 25.
This camp is facilitated by Fabrienna Kittrell and Jennifer Worsley and will include a final performance at 7 p.m. July 26. The camp is open for youth in grades six through 12. Registration is required for this camp.

Pride board elects directors, re-elects officers
Two downtown business owners were elected to the Pride of Kinston Board of Directors June 27, while a third was re-elected to her third three-year term.
The slate of officers, headed by civic leader Shirley Herring, was re-elected to serve during the 2013-14 fiscal year.
New to the board will be Leraine Howard Tolston, owner of Queen Street Deli and Natural Body Pilates on South Queen Street. Her three-year term goes through June 30, 2016. Also new is Bert Statum, owner of Riverside Bicycles and Outdoor Sports on West Gordon Street. Statum fills a vacant position with a term which will end June 30, 2015.
Harriet Harper, owner of South Queen Barber Shop, was re-elected to her third three-year term on the board. She is also a member of Pride’s Design Committee. Pride is served by a 22-member board composed of 11 downtown property/business owners, six persons who serve due to other jobs they hold, and five at-large positions, regardless of residency in Kinston.
Re-elected to the executive committee, in addition to Herring, were Teena Williams, vice chairwoman; Isaac Hines, secretary; Kevin Zoltek, treasurer; Robbie Swinson, at-large member; and Agnes Ho, at-large member.
