Local sorority chapter honors members
At its recent Founder’s Day celebration, Preceptor Phi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi announced its Woman of the Year for 2012-2013. This honor is bestowed on a member who exemplifies the values and virtues of the organization and is chosen by secret ballot from the chapter members.
JoAnn Myers was chosen this year’s Woman of the Year and was presented a pin and bouquet of yellow roses by the 2011-12 Woman of the Year, Valerie Owen.
Owen and another member, Sharon Herring, received the Order of the Rose at the celebration. This honor is bestowed upon members who have completed 15 years of service in the sorority.
WSSU grad has Greene County ties
Keiana Nyckole Morris has received her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Winston-Salem State University. She received her degree in commencement exercises May 18.
She served as president of the Student of North Carolina Association of Educators and as a campus ambassador. She will be teaching in Winston-Salem.
Morris is the granddaughter of Percy and Lilly Edwards of Greene County.
AARP gets scam info
Amy Washington, Home Care manager with the Lenoir County Council on Aging, recently spoke to the AARP local chapter.
She informed members about many scams that are being used to obtain money, and discussed how telemarketers call trying to obtain personal information to access accounts. She also highlighted the many things going on at the Council’s Skinner Senior Center at 112 E. Blount St.
