Last news Tuesday afternoon was there was no news regarding the fire that tore through a Jackson Heights business Monday night.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m. Monday night, Sandy Bottom Volunteer Fire Department received a call of a fire on the 400 block of Wheat Street, at the location of G.W. Piner Trucking & Repairs. Deep Run and Southwood fire crews assisted at the scene.
Lenoir County Commissioner J. Mac Daughety, who lives near the business, said he heard a loud boom and saw black smoke coming from the building when he stepped out of his house to call 911.
Timmy Mooring, deputy chief for the Sandy Bottom VFD, said Tuesday the fire remained under investigation. Firefighters, investigators with the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office, the Lenoir County fire marshal and the State Bureau of Investigation are working the scene.
LCSO Maj. Ryan Dawson said investigators are “still trying to dig it out,” since the business used a number of flammable substances in its every day operations.
Outside the building Tuesday, remains of the previous night’s activity were seen in the yellow “do not cross” tape in the gravel entrance, twisted and blackened metal hanging loose from a large ventilation fan and water dripping from the front door as investigators went about their work in the darkened interior.
“It’s heavy fire and smoke damage throughout,” Mooring said of the building’s condition.
