North Lenoir grad commissioned

Ethan Allan Yelverton of La Grange is a May 2013 graduate of Virginia Tech, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife science with a minor in leadership studies.

A 2009 North Lenoir High School graduate, he was the recipient of a Naval ROTC scholarship.  During his four years at Virginia Tech, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and held the leadership duties of fire team leader his sophomore year, first sergeant during his junior year and regimental executive officer while a senior. Commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy, he will be stationed at Naval Station Norfolk aboard the USS Mason.

He is the son of Allan and Beth C. Yelverton of La Grange. He is the grandson of Margaret W. Yelverton of Eureka and the late Selby Yelverton, and the late Mack and Margaret Cunningham, who lived in La Grange.

 

Learn more about ticks

Stephanie Tyndall, registered nurse and facilitator of the Lyme Disease support group at Lenoir Memorial Hospital, will offer an informative talk about ticks and the problems they cause.

The information session will be from noon to 1 p.m. July 25 in the Lenoir Memorial auditorium. She will cover identifying tricks and safely removing ticks. The event is free to the public and really timely for groups that camp.

Families plan reunions

The family reunion of Claude and Ozzie Taylor will be held Saturday at the Woodman Community Center on Vernon Avenue. For those interested in golfing, swimming or other activities, the event starts at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. All family members are asked to bring pot luck as normal. Barbecue and all the trimmings will be served.

Remember to bring items for the annual auction and any family artifacts to share. Talents are appreciated, whether it be singing, crafts, homemade articles, jams, jellies, etc. The dessert contest also will be held, so label items to be entered in the contest. Descendants of the Daly family of Eastern North Carolina are planning their annual reunion. The 34-year event will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the St. John Free Will Baptist Church fellowship hall, 10 miles south of Goldsboro on Highway 111.
