Elks get new flag
Danny Rice of Woodmen of the World recently presented Exalted Ruler Jim McLain, with Kinston Elks Lodge 740, an American flag for the Lodge.
The presentation was made at the Americanism Essay Awards Dinner in March. The flag replaces the one badly damaged during recent wind storms, which has been retired

Classes offered at Skinner Center
Laughter Yoga at the Lenoir County Council on Aging Skinner Center is moving its meeting day. Starting Friday, the class will meet at 10 a.m. Fridays.
Also, the Center will offer literacy classes for older adults in partnership with Lenoir Community College. The first class will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 15 for those wishing to improve their reading skills. Meetings will continue at the same time on Tuesdays and Thursdays thereafter.

Greene County sets planning session for MOC dinner
MOUNT OLIVE — The planning session for the 2013 Greene County gift support dinner for Mount Olive College will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at Hull Road OFWB Church. The dinner is one of 16 being held throughout Eastern North Carolina.
During the session, Jean F. Ackiss, director of Church Support, will give a presentation about the College. She also will coordinate final plans for the dinner and distribute the dinner literature.
“The dinners have provided more than $12 million in gift support since they were started in 1963,” Ackiss said. “This unrestricted gift support from Original Free Will Baptist churches helps Mount Olive College expand its services to students, the Original Free Will Baptist Church and the region.”
Mount Olive College is a private institution rooted in the liberal arts tradition with defining Christian values. Sponsored by the Convention of Original Free Will Baptists, it has locations in Mount Olive, New Bern, Wilmington, Goldsboro, Research Triangle Park, Washington and Jacksonville. Calvin Ellison, Ph.D., author of “Health & Wellness: Insights for Vibrant Living,” will be speaking at 7 p.m. Aug. 12 at Veterans Challenge Inc., in the former Home Expressions space of Vernon Park Mall, 834 Hardee Road.
Ellison is serving on the N.C. Institute of Medicine Committee Health Reform Task Force and will offer words to encourage health and vibrancy at this community program.
The Veterans Challenge programs are for everyone and they are free. They always include entertainment, refreshments, information, community input and prizes for all.
