Three people accosted a man riding on a scooter around 2:30 a.m. Friday and took the scooter, as well as the man’s mobile phone.

“He said he was traveling north on East Street, approaching Henderson’s Food (Center), when two black males stepped out in the roadway with a black female and knocked him off his moped,” said Woody Spencer, spokesman with the Kinston Department of Public Safety. “After he was knocked off the moped, two male suspects with handguns — he said they beat him in the face with the handguns.

“He said they ran off, except for one, who drove off on his moped.”

Officers later found the black 2012 Gator scooter and recovered it. The scooter was valued at $800, and the phone was valued at $50.

The investigation is ongoing.
