Phi Master sisters hold annual luncheon
The Phi Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International held its annual Mother’s Day luncheon at The Folded Napkin in May.
Sue Hardy Smith was honored as the only living mother of a sorority member. Smith, 92, is the mother of Linda Smith Dawson. Smith was presented a gift from the sorority sisters and was given a tribute by her granddaughters. Legacy members and honorary members also were recognized, including Kristen Bogey, Sophia Heath, Sarah Kennedy, Brianna Murphy, Ava Bowen, Bella Bowen and Jackie Edmundson. Legacy members are enrolled during childhood and are eligible to pledge a chapter at the age of 18.
DG Alan Ginn, son of sorority member Iris Ginn, entertained with a medley of favorite Frank Sinatra songs.
Kinstonian receives scholarship funds
The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation has awarded Brittney Armsby of Kinston a scholarship from the Local Government Federal Credit Union Scholarship Fund. Armsby is a member of LGFCU and plans to attend Mount Olive College.
The Scholar Vision Funds are a collection of funds and resources to help credit union members in North and South Carolina achieve a higher level of education. The Foundation believes that an individual’s self-esteem and economic well-being may be grounded in academic development.
Through the Scholar Vision Funds, educational and financial need scholarships are available to credit union members through the Foundation's General Fund or through a collection of advised and named funds.
Since inception, the Foundation has invested more than $2.3 million to help credit union members better themselves through higher education.
2nd Saturday at the farmer’s market
This is “2nd Saturday” weekend and there are activities all over town to celebrate.
A good way to start the day is with a complimentary breakfast at the Lenoir County Farmer’s Market, beginning at 8 a.m. While there, take advantage of the vendors’ assortments of fresh vegetables, all locally grown. On hand today will be Porter Farm, TC Smith Produce, Bruce Coley, Bill Tilghman, Putnam Family Farm and Upham Homestead with fresh eggs; crowder and Dixie Lee peas; heirloom and regular tomatoes; okra; cucumbers; sweet corn; green and speckled butterbeans; regular and rattlesnake string beans; blueberries; Napa beets; purple, green and golden zucchini; pattypan and yellow squash; collards, mustard, turnips, lettuce and a variety of other leafy greens; Georgia or South Carolina peaches; sprite and canary melons, cantaloupes and local watermelon.
Specialty vendors present today will be Big Oak Farm; Farmhouse Kitchen & Bakery; Inner Banks Seafood; Adele’s Organic Soaps; Snow Angels shaved ice; and Rodney Jarman’s kettle cooked pork skins, boiled and fried peanuts.
