Smiles recipient honored for service
The Lenoir County Smiles program is in its eighth year recognizing quality customer service. Beginning in 2006 to foster ‘good, friendly service with a Smile,’ it is sponsored by Lenoir County Tourism and The Free Press.
This week’s winner is Joan Jones with Kinston Department of Public Safety. The winners are recommended by the community, receive a small gift and are pictured in the Sunday edition of The Free Press, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Bridge club names winners
The Fairfield Duplicate Bridge Club played regular games July 30 and Aug. 6.
The July 30 winners were: Eva Balknight and Jenny Holt, first place; Jane Hood and Barbara Sebald, second; Pinkey Harper and Geneva Hood, third; and Joe Goldwasser and Nancy Barwick, fourth.
The Aug. 6 winners were: Edith Cahn and Dayle Pond, first; Jenny Holt/Eva Balknight and Joe Goldwasser/Lamar Finch, tied for second; and Jane Hood and Barbara Sebald, fourth.
A regular game will be played at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday at Fairfield Center. The club welcomes and encourages all bridge players. Call 252-523-6791.
Kinston woman earns MD
Dr. Corrine Arrington Watson received her Doctor of Medicine degree May 10 from the Brody School of Medicine at ECU.
Watson will complete her residency in pediatrics at the Carolinas Medical Center and Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.
She is the daughter of Peter and Anita Watson of Kinston.
Kinston native to sing today
Tacha Coleman-Parr, noted jazz performer, will end 2nd Saturdays for August with a free concert 3 p.m. today in the Schechter Auditorium of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library.
The singer graduated in the 1980s from Kinston High School and will offer a selection of jazz standards, ballads and originals. She will be joined by the Eric Xavier Jazztet (Eric Xavier Dawson is also from Kinston) and Antuan Hawkins, children’s librarian and performing artist, in the Summer Serenade.
