Tying quilts for veterans

The Relief Society of the Woodington Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently hand-tied 25 quilts for the N.C. State Veterans Home on Hull Road. The quilts featured themes of patriotism, the military and nature.

Among the quilters werePatti Jones, Janet Gosnell, Susan Howard, Danielle Barwick, Jessie Lee, Frances Stroud and Nyra Moody.

The Relief Society and the Woodington Ward are grateful for the service provided by all veterans.

 

DSS workshop promotes stronger families

The Lenoir County Department of Social Services is sponsoring a Strengthening Families workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today in the Waller Building of Lenoir Community College.

Lenoir County DSS Director Susan Moore will welcome participants and guests and introduce the morning keynote speaker, Wayne Black, director of the N.C. Division of Social Services. The Rev. Wanda Hall, executive director of The Gate, will be the keynote speaker at the afternoon closing session.

Morning and early afternoon workshops will offer topics on feeding a family on a budget, foster parent recruitment and adoption, emergency preparedness for families and gang awareness, grouped between breaks for exhibits and refreshments. In addition to Lenoir Co. DSS services, around 18 resource agencies will be on site with information and representatives.

 

Farmer’s Market open today and Tuesday

Today and Tuesday, the Lenoir County Farmer’s Market will be open, offering fresh, local produce and a variety of specialty items to customers.

Porter Farm, TC Smith Produce, Bruce Coley, Bill Tilghman, Putnam Family Farm and hopefully Upham Homestead will bring fresh eggs; Crowder and Dixie Lee peas; heirloom and regular tomatoes; green and purple okra; cucumbers; sweet corn; string beans; blueberries; purple, green and golden zucchini; pattypan and yellow squash; collards, mustard, turnips and a variety of other leafy greens; Georgia or South Carolina peaches; and local sprite and canary melons, cantaloupes and watermelon.

Specialty vendors will include Rodney Jarman, Queen Street Deli, Adeles Organic Soaps and Candles, Inner Banks Seafood, Della’s Delights, Farmhouse Bakery, Big Oak Farm and Snow Angels Shaved Ice.

 

Nursing scholarships available

The Lenoir Memorial Foundation has three nursing scholarships available for students who have already completed at least one semester of their nursing curriculum.

The Cindy Jones, Jamie Fields and Stackhouse scholarships are given annually and the scholarship award is $1,000 each. The deadline for submitting scholarship application(s) is Thursday.
