SNOW HILL — Sponsors will take up their tennis rackets and golf clubs Thursday through Sunday to help raise money for Greene County students attending LCC.

The annual tennis tournament was started by Greene Ridge Racquet Club owner Bobby Taylor 31 years ago, and in 2003 Taylor began his partnership with the LCC Foundation. Over the last 10 years, the tournament, which added a golf component in 2011, has raised an average of $10,000 a year to assist Greene County residents in their pursuit of an education at LCC.

Money from the event can be used either for paying tuition at LCC or taking continuing education classes, said Jason Miller, Director of LCC’s Greene County Center.

Jeanne Kennedy, LCC’s director of institutional advancement, said the goal of the tournament and other fundraising events is to help assist any student with a financial need.

Kennedy said there is a gap between the number of scholarship requests and the number that can be awarded. Last year, the foundation received 450 requests, but was only able to give out 186 scholarships.

The tournament helps address the need of students living in Greene County.

“This tournament allows us to give more scholarships to students from Greene County,” Kennedy said.

Partnering with Cutter Creek Golf Club to add a day of golf to the agenda was a joint effort by Taylor and the foundation to increases the amount of money brought in by the event.

“I wanted to make it bigger and better, and raise more money for the foundation,” Taylor said.

Sponsorships can be given in one of four different brackets ranging from $100 to $1,000.
