HOOKERTON -- A house fire that broke out around midnight Friday left one man suffering from third degree burns.

Guy Potter remains in critical condition at the North Carolina Jayees Burn Center in Chapel Hill after he was pulled out of the house at 704 S. William Hooker Drive by his  girlfriend's daughter, Kelly Radeka, Greene County Emergency Management Director Randy Skinner said.

"The fire started in the back bedroom that Mr. Potter was in," he said.

A call came into dispatch at 12:04 a.m. Saturday with Hookerton, Snow Hill and Maury fire departments and EMS and Greene County EMS responding, Skinner said.

Skinner relayed what happened. There were four occupants sleeping, including a child, when the fire started in the brick house. Radeka and the two others got out and she tried to get Potter, whose bedroom door was shut.

But the door was too hot to open, so she went around the outside of the house to the window. Potter came to the window and she pulled him out.

All four occupants were taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital and were three were treated and released. Potter was transported to the burn center.

"We're not looking at any foul play," Skinner said. "… My understanding is that there is a possibility the smoke detectors were corrupt."

The source of the fire is still under investigation, he said.
