Bridge construction starting in September will cause drivers to be detoured on N.C. 58 between Kinston and Snow Hill.
Starting Sept. 3, the section of N.C. 58 between Taylor Heath Road and Hugo Road will be closed to motorists while construction crews replace the bridge over Stoneyton Creek.
According to Brad McMannen, resident engineer for New Bern Construction, when the bridge was inspected by the N.C. Department of Transportation inspectors, it received a low enough score to warrant being replaced. The bridge is 75 years old.
When construction is complete, changes to the bridge will include a concrete surface and concrete barrier rail, and guardrails will be put in place on both sides of the approach to the bridge, said McMannen.
The project is state-funded and will cost $837,000.
