Evening Rotary brings home gold

Alzheimer’s disease and golden buckets might seem an unlikely connection, but the combination led to two recent trophies for the Kinston Evening Rotary Club, one of the district’s smaller clubs. On July 13, the club was awarded two trophies in district-wide competition — one for most money raised and another for highest per capita giving within a club — for raising funds for Alzheimer’s research.

Bert Statum, outgoing club president, accepted the trophies on behalf of the club at the banquet held at the Dunes Club in Atlantic Beach. At the same event, Jerry Kanter, a founding member of the club, was named District 7730 CART Rotarian of the Year, and Andy Chused, formerly of Kinston, was installed as governor of Rotary District 7730.

For more than 15 years, CART — Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust — has donated more than $4 million to leading-edge research programs for the cure/prevention of the disease. These research institutions include the Mayo Clinic, Case Western Reserve University, Emory, Johns Hopkins, UCLA and the Cleveland Clinic.

Clubs throughout North and South Carolina, Georgia and other parts of the country invite members to empty their pocket change into blue CART buckets on each table at the weekly meetings. Of the collected funds, 100 percent is donated through grants to help leverage hundreds of millions of additional research dollars. The program was created by former Goldsboro resident Roger Ackerman, now with the Sumter, S.C., Rotary Club.

The Kinston Evening Rotary Club has provided strong support for CART since its early days. The District trophies — those golden buckets — recognize the club’s commitment to this project. The club also annually undertakes a live lobster sale in the fall, a holiday dinner for senior citizens at Kinston Towers, an oyster roast, dictionaries for Lenoir County fifth-graders, and Rotary International’s Polio Plus program, among other projects.

Kinston Evening Rotary meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at L.C. Tsao Asian Restaurant (House of Wang.) The club invites prospective members to attend or call Karen Sperati, club president, at 252-208-1710 for more information.
