AARP gets scam info

Caroline Farmer, deputy director of Victims and Citizens Service with the N.C. Department of Justice, was the speaker at the August meeting of AARP Chapter 4109.

She informed members of the many scams going around Eastern North Carolina and discussed ways to protect personal information. Tips included not giving information to someone who calls — banks and credit card companies have the information on file and don’t need to ask for it. She said you can get a free credit report and put a security freeze on your credit. She distributed information sheets with many facts on scams and self-protection.

At the meeting, the annual school supplies drive reaped more than 15 bags of ring notebooks, boxes of crayons, glue sticks, boxes of tissues, packages of pencils and lots more.

For more information from the N.C. Attorney General’s Office, call 877-566-7226. For AARP information, call Janice Sellers, chapter secretary, at 252-522-4084, or Gene Rybolt, chapter coordinator, at 252-523-0988.

Calling all vendors and chefs

Living the Good Life Expo is set for 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at Vernon Park Mall, and event sponsor Heart-Healthy Lenoir Project is looking for vendors and chefs to participate.

The Kinston-Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce, Lenoir County Cooperative Extension, Vernon Park Mall, Tourism Development Authority (VisitKinston), The Free Press, Lenoir County SPCA and Steve Hardy’s Original Beach Party present the Expo and Food Tasting which annually offers visitors a variety of things to see, do and taste. It also provides a chance to learn about the services and products of local businesses. Again this year, pets will be welcome.

The Culinary Challenge allows regional chefs to showcase their edible artwork and creations. By purchasing a $5 bracelet, attendees can sample soups, entrees, appetizers and desserts prepared for the Culinary Challenge. The Heart Healthy Entrée category offers those sampling a chance to cast their People's Choice vote for their favorite dish. Food tasting will be open to the public beginning at 4 p.m.

For more information, including vendor applications, contact Jan Parson at 252-527-1131 or jparson@kinstonchamber.
