Unofficially the last long weekend of summer, Labor Day is a time for many to relax and enjoy a final weekday off from school and work. Everyone has different traditions and ways to spend the weekend.
Amanda Hoover said she enjoys spending time with her husband Chris, their two kids and her parents during the holiday weekend.
The girls will go shopping and hang around the house, Hoover said. Today, the men will go out dove hunting starting at noon and won’t be back until after dark.
“At the end of the weekend, we feel refreshed,” Hoover said. “Summer is over and we feel good going into the fall.”
To Sarah Cox, Labor Day marks the last weekend of summer.
Activities include a cookout, water balloon fights and lighting up fireworks, Cox said. It is also a last chance to get any final cleaning and yard work done before the weather gets colder.
Getting out of town and going camping at Myrtle Beach is the normal course of action for Gail Paderick.
“It’s a good time to get away and relax,” Paderick said.
Joey Farmer sees the weekend in a patriotic light.
“I get together with friends and family, cook a hog and celebrate the American way,” Farmer said.
At the Archie household, Labor Day is a chance to conduct longer workouts in preparation for triathlons. Dick Archie trains with his sons, William and Wilson.
“With no school, William is able to have more time to recover from a longer workout,” Archie said. “He can still get school work and others things done, too.”
Archie said one of the days during the weekend will consist of an 85-95 mile bike ride and a 16-mile run.
According to the Kinston Public Services, trash pickup for today has been moved to Tuesday, with the rest of the week remaining on schedule.
The Lenoir County School board, which normally meets the first Monday of every month, has pushed today’s meeting to Tuesday due to the holiday. The Lenoir County Commissioners and Kinston City Council have pushed their monthly meetings to Tuesday as well.
