LILLINGTON — Robert Reynolds Mason Sr., a former two-term sheriff of Jones County and a 25-year veteran of the State Highway Patrol, died at his Lillington home on Monday. He was 77.
Mason served both terms as Jones County Sheriff in the 1990s after retiring from the Highway Patrol, where he was a trooper in Jones, Lenoir, Johnston and Wayne counties. He retired from the SHP in 1991.
After his service as sheriff, he eventually moved back to Lillington in Harnett County, where he was born in 1936, the son of the late Wade Clarendon and Hassie Brown Mason.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and also served as a Mason and a Shriner. Mason was also very instrumental in the formation of Boy Scout Troop 111 in Trenton.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Spring Hill United Methodist Church, 1960 Spring Hill Church Road, Lillington. Friends will be received today at the church from 6-8 p.m.
