Homeless Shelter receives supplies

Glen Raven Baptist Church Vacation Bible School chose the Friends of the Homeless Shelter as a July mission.

Cleaning supplies and food products were collected and donated by children and adults involved in VBS. Offerings collected during the week also were used to purchase supplies.

Jasper Newborn, director of the shelter, accepted the donations from church members Brenda and Glenn Adams, and Jan Rouse, pastor.

 

Student wins July 4 essay contest

Nnanna Okafor, a ninth-grader at East Wake High School in Wendell, won first place in the Independence Day Essay Contest sponsored by The Grey Area, Wendell’s newspaper. He took home a $50 prize.

His parents, Felix and Ravita Okafor, encouraged him to write over the summer holiday. He entered the contest, which was open to all ages.

Nnanna is the grandson of Pauline Taylor of Kinston and the late Walter Ray Taylor.

 

Gospel group to perform

Brian Free & Assurance will bring a gospel concert to Westside Free Will Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Friday.

The concert will be in the church’s Family Life Center, 1205 Lynn Drive (behind Bill Fay Park). No tickets are required for admission. However, a love offering will be accepted. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

The southern gospel quartet has appeared on Prime Time Country, Hee Haw, The Today Show and many episodes of the Gaither Video series.

Farmer’s market to offer breakfast

Today at the Lenoir County Farmer’s Market, Queen Street Deli will feature sweet potato ham biscuits, a good way to start the day. The vendor also will have half and whole pound cakes, Ezekiel bread, whole grain cookies, chicken pot pies, Moravian chicken pot pies, sweet potato chicken pot pies and Shepherds Pies.

The seafood vendor – Inner Banks Seafood – and soap vendor – Adeles Organic Soaps and Candles -- will continue to come on Tuesday and Saturday, as usual.

Heather, of Della’s Delights, will be at the market today with a table full of goodies.
Farmhouse Bakery and Big Oak Farm both will be on site today.

 

Junior Leadership Lenoir applications available

Applications for Junior Leadership Lenoir, sponsored by Young Professionals of Lenoir County, are available now. JLL is an opportunity for high school juniors to learn more about the community and encourage future positive involvement.

All six area high schools -- North Lenoir, South Lenoir, Kinston High, Arendell Parrott Academy, Bethel Christian Academy and Lenoir County Early College High School -- will have student representation. Applications are available at each high school and on the Kinston-Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce website, kinstonchamber.com.

Deadline for submission is Monday. Student interviews will be held Sept. 16, and selected applicants will be contacted for the panel interviews. Businesses interested in sponsorship can contact Ashley Pierce at ashley.pierce@self-help.org.

 

Toastmasters plan open house

For its next regular meeting, the Kinston Toastmasters Club will hold an open house at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Brody Conference Room at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library.

The club will demonstrate to the public how a typical Toastmasters meeting is conducted. Light refreshments will be served.

Elwood Hill will give a speech about the benefits of speaking. Eugene Kupstas will be grammarian and Robyn Jones will be topic master. Members are invited to participate in the regular meetings, and participants are invited to become new members.
