Northwest Elementary sponsors Familyfest

The Northwest Elementary School PTA will host its Familyfest from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at the school, 1701 Old Well Road.

The public is invited to join in the fun with Flimsy the Clown, an inflatable moon walk and giant slide, dunking booth, face painting, sweet treat trot (cake walk), clunker car smash, basketball shoot-out, drawing and more. Dinner will be easy, with all the kids’ favorites – Chick-fil-A, Little Caesar’s pizza, chips, drinks, cookies and popcorn – available for purchase.

Admittance is free and tickets for most games and amusements are 50 cents each or a $15 armband for unlimited access to all games, sweet treat trot and inflatables.

 

Twelve to participate in scholarship program

Twelve senior girls representing Arendell Parrott Academy, North Lenoir High School and South Lenoir High School will compete in the Distinguished Young Women of Lenoir County Program, formerly Lenoir County Junior Miss, at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Grainger-Hill Performing Arts Center. 

The La Grange Rotary Club sponsors this program yearly. Winners will receive scholarship money to help further their education, as well as gifts donated by local merchants. Program coordinators are Ginny Pollock-Moody and Mellany Davis. Jennifer Tyndall is the choreographer of the program.

Lenoir County’s current Distinguished Young Woman is Morgan Harrison, daughter of Ted and Sheila Harrison of La Grange. She is a North Lenoir graduate and a freshman at N.C. State University.

Contestants in this year’s program from Group A include: Julie Williams, daughter of Junious and Teresa Williams; Madison Hill, daughter of Jeff and Prissy Hill; Katelynn Davis, daughter of Waylon and Tonya Adams; Nicole Robinson, daughter of Buddy and LaVerne Robinson; Haley Rouse, daughter of John and Cheryl Rouse; and Madeline Howard, daughter of Kim and Angie Howard.

Group B contestants include Taylor Perry, daughter of Jay and Christel Perry; Mary-Ashlyn Tucker, daughter of Ricky and Jan Tucker; Allyson Heath, daughter of Jamie and Mia Heath; Jordan Davis, daughter of Jeff and Pam Davis; Madison Saint-Amand, daughter of Steve and Megan Saint-Amand, and Tracie Taylor, daughter of Chris and Dawn Taylor.

The contestants will perform a variety of talents in a presentation limited to 90 seconds. They will compete in preliminary competition areas of fitness, talent, self-expression, interviews and scholastics.

Judging is based on fitness, 15 percent; self-expression, 15 percent; talent, 25 percent; scholastics, 20 percent; and interviews, 25 percent.

After struggling for years to explain the program which has provided college scholarships and life-enhancing opportunities for young women since 1958, America’s Junior Miss has a new name: Distinguished Young Women. The national program is based in Mobile, Ala., where the national finals each year in June.

Distinguished Young Women is sponsored by the City of Mobile, Mobile County, Encore Rehabilitation, Spanx, Wintzell’s Oyster House, Mobile Gas -- A Sempra Company, Regions Bank, Alabama Power Foundation and Master Boat Builders. Local program winners and at-large contestants will participate in the Distinguished Young Women of North Carolina state finals in Greensboro in February. Designed to help college-bound seniors further their education, North Carolina’s program involves hundreds of girls each year.
