Foundation awards Jones scholarship
Meredith Carraway of Walstonburg has been awarded the Cindy Jones Memorial Scholarship by the Lenoir Memorial Foundation. She will graduate this fall, a semester early, from the ECU School of Nursing.
To read Joy Shepard’s letter of recommendation helps one understand why Carraway was selected. Registered Nurse and ECU Clinical Assistant Professor Shepard states that Carraway “consistently delivered the highest quality patient-and family-focused care . . . was caring, gentle, compassionate, conscientious, and professional at all times.”
Shepard continued that “Meredith came to class prepared, was professional and punctual, and demonstrated active participation and meaningful engagements in class discussions.” She summed it up by declaring that “Meredith clearly demonstrates sterling moral character, as well as a high standard of performance in the nursing program.”
The Cindy A. Jones Memorial Scholarship was established through gifts from family and friends in 2004. Sept. 16 marked the 10th anniversary of Jones’ death, after a courageous battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The scholarship is a living memorial to a wife, mother, friend and nurse who was deeply loved and highly regarded, personally and professionally – by colleagues and patients alike.
Jones’ career at Lenoir Memorial spanned 15 years, first in the medical unit, later transferring to Intensive Care, and then to the Ambulatory Care Unit. She was certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and was recognized as her unit’s Nurse of the Year in 2002.
The Cindy Jones Memorial Scholarship is intended to help pay for non-tuition expenses.
To make a charitable contribute to the Cindy Jones Memorial Scholarship, send it to the Lenoir Memorial Foundation with a memo note to the Cindy Jones Scholarship. Send to Lenoir Memorial Foundation, 100 Airport Road, Kinston, NC 28501.
