Mom-daughter carry state flag in national games

Fran Allison of Kinston and her daughter Jackie of Raleigh are not new to Senior Games. But they are new at carrying the North Carolina state flag at the National Senior Games opening ceremony.

They were the first mother-daughter team ever to carry a state flag in the national competition on opening night in July in Cleveland. The nationals occur every two years.

Jackie, 57 years old, has participated in Senior Games for two years in basketball and track. She usually plays, but coached her basketball team this year due to an injury.

Fran, 80 years old, has participated in Senior Games for 25 years in basketball, track, tennis and other sports.

Community hymn sing a combined event

First Baptist Church invites the community to its Community Hymn Sing scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at the church, 2600 Rouse Road.

This multiple church event will feature a 60-member mass community choir from multiple churches and is a gateway of the united faith community in Kinston. It is the first of hopefully many community, multiple church/multiple faith events. It is an example of the faith community coming together to spread community involvement through a combined service.

For more information, contact Kayla Scott, FBC youth/music assistant, at 252-678-2383.

To commemorate the opening of its 300th store, sweetFrog is helping connect children in need with up to 300,000 meals. The Kinston store is participating in the effort.

The company has declared today, Sept. 22, as “No Kid Hungry Day,” culminating a weeklong campaign around the country. The company and its participating stores have been collecting nonperishable food donations, and sweetFrog customers can make additional contributions in-store or online today.

Kinston patrons visiting the store at 2405-F N. Herritage St. today can bring canned and nonperishable food donations for the local food bank. The first 300 people who visit today can enter the national sweepstakes, with a chance to win one of three 100 free 12-ounce cups of frozen yogurt.
