Officers responded to Henderson Food Store in the early morning hours last week to find a woman suffering severe injuries from allegedly behind dragged by a car.

“She called from Henderson’s store at 550 N. East St. on about 4:11 a.m. on (Sept. 18),” said Woody Spencer, spokesman for the Kinston Department of Public Safety. “She was suffering from severe lacerations to her left cheek, and road rash to her back and upper body. She was transported from around DuPont on (N.C.) 11, where EastCare airlifted her to Greenville.”

From Vidant Medical Center, the victim, 36, was transported to an undisclosed hospital in Chapel Hill for further treatment.

The victim told investigators she was near the store’s location when a black man, about 5-foot 2-inches tall and with a long beard, driving a dark midsize sedan, assaulted her and dragged her along the ground with his vehicle. She also alleged a sexual assault, but no evidence of sexual assault was found at the time.

The case remains under investigation.
