UPDATE:

The truism stands: no good deed goes unpunished.

At the West Vernon Avenue Walmart on Jan. 2, a black female in a store-provided motorized cart asked a 79-year-old woman if she could hand her a canned good. When the older woman’s back was turned, the woman in the cart stole a credit card from her purse, according to a Kinston Department of Public Safety statement.

Subsequently, the woman in the cart bought a laptop with the card and left the store, walking without assistance, per the photo and video released by KDPS.

The store was the only place the card was used.

“No, it hasn’t been used (since the incident),” Detective James Webb said. “It was used twice that day – one of them was successful, but both of them were in Walmart. She had gone to the electronics section, and then she tried the jewelry section, but I think there may have been a maximum amount that she could use, so it wouldn’t allow her to use it in the jewelry section. I think since then, the victim cancelled the card out.”

People are frequently caught shoplifting from Walmart, but taking another customer’s credit card to buy goods at the store is a twist on local retail crime.

Anyone who can identify the woman in the photo is asked to call Webb at 252-939-3195.
