Heavy rains Tuesday night and Wednesday caused an unfinished road repair to turn into a dangerous hole.
Steve Miller, water resources manager with Kinston Public Services, said a water leak on Vernon Avenue in front of the Woodmen Community Center had been repaired on Monday. The patch covered about an 8-foot area, he said.
“With the weather we haven’t been able to get asphalt,” Miller said.
So gravel was used to temporarily patch the hole, he said.
By Wednesday, the rains had washed out the gravel.
“It’s my understanding that a car was damaged,” he said.
By late afternoon on Wednesday, workers closed off the lane directly in front of the Woodmen Center.
Once the rain stops, the workers will be able to fill the hole with gravel.
“If the weather is good they will be able to make asphalt.”
He said the lane will likely be closed until at least Monday.
